What's in a Name? Your Post-Wedding Surname Options!

Do you need to change your surname after marriage?

So, you've said your "I dos," sealed it with a sweet kiss, and danced the night away.

Now comes the million-dollar question: "Do I have to change my surname after I'm married?"

The short and sweet answer?  No!  Today, you have more choices than ever.

So, here’s your guide to post-wedding surnames and what happens to your surname after your wedding day!

Does getting married automatically change your surname?

First and foremost, no, it doesn’t.  Your surname remains put and stays the same until you decide to change it.

If you’re heading straight from your wedding location to Tahiti for your honeymoon, don’t stress about changing your passport just yet.  Keep it in your current surname and travel worry free.

Want to change your surname?  You’ll need to go through the process when you return from your honeymoon and I’ve got some tips to make it easy.

So, what are your options when it comes to changing your name after your wedding day?

The classic choice: Taking your partner’s name

Ahh, the time-honoured tradition of becoming Mr. and Mrs.  It’s a tradition that still warms hearts (and gets a huge cheer from wedding guests!).

For many couples, it’s a beautiful way to symbolise unity, family and the beginning of a brand-new chapter together.  And if that’s the choice that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?  Go for it!

But wait… what if we flipped that tradition on its head?

Plot twist! When surname tradition gets a modern makeover

As a celebrant on the Sunshine Coast, I recently presented a sweet couple of newlyweds as Mr. and Mrs. Engaged (not their real name, of course).  But here’s the kicker. “Engaged” wasn’t the groom’s surname, it was the bride’s!

In a power move that had everyone talking, this groom decided to take his wife’s last name.  And why not?  Love is about partnership, right?  And sometimes, breaking tradition just feels right.

So, if you and your partner want to mix things up and swap names in a non-traditional way, do it!  Marriage is the perfect platform to change your surname, so give it careful consideration.

Keeping it in the family: Holding onto your maiden name

For some, keeping their surname is more than just a personal choice, it’s a legacy.

Maybe you’re a doctor, business owner, or creative powerhouse, in the military or your name is part of your brand.  Or maybe you’re the last in your family line and carrying on the name is important to you.  Or, let’s be honest, you just love your name and don’t want to change it!

Whatever the reason, it’s completely valid.  Your wedding day is about love, not legal paperwork, so if keeping your name feels right, stick with it!

Making the change: Easy as wedding cake!

If you’re ready to take on a new last name, there are name change kits that make the whole process a breeze, no confusing paperwork, no running around, just clear steps to make it happen.

One of my personal favorites?  After The Wedding which is an easy-to-use kit that includes all the checklists, forms, and instructions you need.  Trust me, it’s a game-changer!

So, what’s the right choice?

At the end of the day, there’s no right or wrong answer.  It’s all about what feels best for you and your partner.  Whether you’re keeping your name, swapping surnames, or sticking with tradition, it’s your love story, your rules!
